How to set a wallpaper on iPhone
Setting a wallpaper takes under a minute once the image is in your Photos library. This guide covers the two quickest ways, how to use different lock and home screens, how to save a wallpaper you downloaded in Safari, and what to do when iOS zooms the picture.
Start with the right size
iPhone screens come in many shapes, from the 16:9 iPhone SE to the wide inner screen of iPhone Duo. When a wallpaper's shape doesn't match your screen, iOS zooms it until it fills the display, which crops the edges and softens detail. Every wallpaper on this site is available at the exact resolution of each model: pick your iPhone on the wallpaper's page before you tap download. Not sure which you have? Open Settings › General › About and look at Model Name, then find it in our list of iPhone wallpaper sizes, or see which iPhone you have.
Set a wallpaper from Photos
- Open the Photos app and tap the wallpaper image.
- Tap the Share button, scroll down and tap Use as Wallpaper.
- Move or pinch the image to frame it. Swipe to try photo styles, and tap the clock to change its font and colour.
- Tap Add, then Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both screens.
Set a wallpaper from Settings
- Open Settings › Wallpaper and tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos and choose your image.
- Adjust it the same way, then tap Add.
You can also start from the lock screen itself: touch and hold the lock screen, tap the + button, then choose Photos.
Use different lock and home screens
After you tap Add, choose Customize Home Screen instead of the pair option. Tap Photos to pick a second image, or keep the same image and turn on blur so app icons stand out. Busy photos usually work better on the lock screen, with a calmer pattern or gradient behind your apps.
Save a wallpaper you downloaded in Safari
When you download a wallpaper in Safari, iOS saves it to the Downloads folder in the Files app, not to Photos. Open Files, tap the image, tap Share, then Save Image. It now appears in Photos, ready to use as above.
Fix a zoomed or blurry wallpaper
- Use your exact model's size. A file that matches your screen's resolution needs no zooming.
- Pinch out while adjusting so the whole image fits the screen.
- Avoid screenshots of wallpapers, which are often lower quality than the original download.
- Turn off the depth effect if the subject is being cut awkwardly around the clock: touch and hold the lock screen, tap Customize, then the … button.
iOS 15 and earlier
Open Settings › Wallpaper › Choose a New Wallpaper, pick a photo, move it into place, tap Set, then choose Lock Screen, Home Screen or Both.
Common questions
Why does my wallpaper look zoomed in or blurry?
iOS zooms a wallpaper whose shape doesn't match your screen. Download the size made for your exact iPhone model, then pinch out while adjusting the wallpaper so it fits the whole screen. Very small images also look soft, so use a full-resolution file.
Can I use different wallpapers on the lock screen and home screen?
Yes. After adding a wallpaper, choose Customize Home Screen instead of Set as Wallpaper Pair, then pick a different photo for the home screen.
Where do wallpapers downloaded in Safari go?
Safari saves downloads to the Downloads folder in the Files app. Open the image there, tap Share, then Save Image to put it in Photos.
Do dark wallpapers save battery?
On iPhones with an OLED screen, black pixels are switched off, so a mostly-black wallpaper uses a little less power than a bright one. The difference is small but real, especially with an Always-On display.
